2004 Rodeo Question Sign In

Single mom needs advice on "sputtering" sound.

2004 Rodeo
80k miles

I had it checked out this morning and the diagnostician says the weld pulled apart where the catalytic converter is located. They will give me a quote on how much a repair would cost (if it can be repaired) or call the dealer for replacement part costs. From what I understand the converter is in the pipe and would need to be replaced also. They say it was not a recent repair or appeared defective so a normal wear and tear?

I'm concerned it may have been the welding the dealer did when they replaced a fuel pump recall a few years ago. I know they had to reweld something. I'm also concerned that it may possibly be from a front end damage incurred from an accident (not my fault) where nearly everything in the front end was replaced. Here is a link on the recalled pump that was done.

no live links to other sites

What would be the right questions to ask?
What could possibly happen if I don't get this part fixed soon?

I'm thinking about taking it to another mechanic to see if I get the same answers.....if the first mechanic quotes very high.

I'm not sure what question you would need to ask?

As far as cutting the exhaust, this is required to do on some jobs and there is just no way around it (especially on a 4WD Rodeo). I'm not sure when the work was done but if it was a defective weld, usually that would show up pretty quickly after the repair. Normally on something like that you would be looking in the range of 90 days to a year warranty for workmanship depending on the shop.

The fact the vehicle was in an accident changes things. There was a pretty big "jolt" to the system and that is probably what contributed to the weld breaking (if that is what broke, I can't see it so don't know)

Definitely get a 2nd opinion. If it can be rewelded, then that would be the cheapest option. It the cat is shot then just call around and try to find the cheapest quote....

Re: 2004 Rodeo Question Sign In

Thank you for the info. Are welds generally covered if I have a warranty on the cat. converter? It says 8 years or 80k . The part looks like a long pipe with the cat in the middle so I wouldn't particulary be able to purchase the cat by itself or the pipe with the broken weld.
