04 Dodge Stratus 120k miles 2.7l

To start off this is my mothers car and im trying to help her figure out whats wrong with it. Driving slow around town the heat gauge will go right in the middle after a few minutes of driving it. I drove it going 55 for 20 miles and the gauge didnt go up or down. It doesnt seem to make a differemce of the heat or ac is on. One thing I fou d odd is that the heat and ac only work if the setting is set to 4 , 0-3 do nothing. I am not smart with vehicles at all but I have a friend who is pretty smart with it. I was wondering what your thoughts on the probable cause of this issue would be. All input is greatly appreciated as you would be helping a good woman. Thanks all for your input. Also I dont know if this holds any relevance to this issue but her electric gas gauge doesnt work as well as the radio.

It doesn't sound like you have a problem at all. It's completely normal for it to run hotter when stopped or in slow traffic. It is engineered to do that. As long as it never goes all the way into the red, you don't have a problem.

You should have already verified that the coolant level is full.
