2004 Astra Coupe 2,2 head gasket. Garage at fault? Sign In

Hey thanks for reading. . . my petrol 2.2 astra started to sound like a diesel car coming from the top end. Took it to a garage who said is was the timing chain would cost £300 so went ahead with it then got another call saying there were 2 chains needed £600 then called back again and said it was the tappets all 16 needed replaced £400

Had the car back about a week when it started to squeal and lose power so much so it had to be towed in.

They then said it was the oil pump and after me kicking off offered to take the cost for this, after they had changed this they called again and said it was now an oil blockage and would have to remove and replace the head gasket £400 I said no and they went ahead and did it anyway but now wont replace it unless I pay them. I have had the car removed from the garage but its completely gone.

Does this all sound correct?

Is the car worth having the head done or will it cost me more in the long run?

I have spent £1000 on the car should I cut mt losses?

Should I take the garage to court? Can I prove it?

Please help

Well i took my car back a week later and they said there was no oil getting to the top end. They would have to replace the oil pump. After they did this they then said they had to take the head gasket off as there was a blockage

This sure sounds like the whole thing has gone from bad to worse and from first post probably was the sound of lack of oil pressure and damage can be fast and fatal to engine if so. Surprised if so that there wasn't a warning via gauge, light or both and seconds count.

No telling what extra damage may have happened and IMO needed serious diagnosing before declaring this engine not worth fighting with but wasn't there of course to make judgements or at least warning you this could be worse than met the eye.

Legal action?: I can't say how long the engine was run sounding like a diesel - not good. Now with all that work it started squealing also not good. Should you go legal is up to you and local laws and may lose or wait ages. That's all your call unless you want to lose more money to have this diagnosed more at another place,

He's from the other side of the pond. Here's the American version:
They then said it was the oil pump. I went ballastic and gave them a piece of my mind. They then backed down and offered to put a pump in at their expense..That did not fix it and now they are saying its an oil passage blocked . I said no to more work , but they removed head without my permission. Now they refuse to finish job unless I pay for the unauthhorized work.I had the car towed home . But the engine is apart and I cannot use it.

If you have a consumer complaint agency I would file a complaint. Legal action would add more exspense(expert witness, etc) even if you did win. If the car is in overall good shape find a shop that will finish the work with a written estimate .

Here is my version:

I think you need another engine.
