2003 Pontiac GrandAM Sign In

I apologize in advance for the long story, but I desperately need some help.

In October, 2010 I started driving a company car causing this 2003 Pontiac GrandAM to do a lot of sitting. I started the car about once a week which probably isn't enough. One morning the car horn was blaring for no reason. It was as if someone was pushing on the horn. As soon as I hit the horn a few times it stopped. The next weekend the same thing happened. The weekend after that it happened again. However, when I hit the horn a few times nothing happened. The blaring continued and it was annoying me beyond belief. Out of desperation I started the car and pushed the horn as hard as possible and held my hand there. Surprisingly the noise stopped, but as soon as I let go the noise started again. I did the same thing several times and eventually it stopped. I turned the car off and let it sit for another week. When I went to start the car up nothing happened. It was as if the car battery was dead. After jump starting the car everything was okay. A few weeks later the car was dead again and it required jumper cables. I took the car to a mechanic who claims the battery and alternator need to be replaced. It will cost me $635. I said no thanks and took the car back.

As of right now, here is what's wrong with the car:

Trac Off (Idiot Light)
ABS (Idiot Light)
Service Vehicle Soon (Idiot Light)
The horn doesn't work (Horn relay? Pad underneath the steering wheel?)
The car won't start without jumper cables if it sits for extended periods of time

For the last few days I have been vigorously starting the car up in the cold weather. It has snowed here in NY way too many times in the last month. If the alternator is bad, why is the car now starting without jumper cables? I'm extremely confused. Please help.
