2003 Jeep Liberty Sport Makes Roaring noise with AC / Defrost On Sign In

Year of Vehicle: 2003
Make: Jeep
Model: Liberty Sport
Engine: 3.7 L V6
Mileage: 98,000

Lately I've been noticing that whenever I have the defroster or AC on, I get a low-pitched, roaring sound coming from the front end of my jeep. This never happens, unless the AC or Defrost is switched on. Just last week, I had to have both valve cover gaskets replaced. This noise started happening almost immediately after that.

I took it to one shop. Diagnosis was that I needed a new radiator fan module. $410 part. Mechanic said that my fan was making noise when it was running at a higher speed, which it needed to do to accommodate the AC Compressor (which comes on when Defrost or AC is on, obviously).

OK, so I decided to get a second opinion. Another guy looked at it, and told me that the fan wasn't the problem - he said the AC compressor was bad. His reasoning was that when the compressor's electrical power was disconnected, the noise went away. He said he thought the fan itself was fine.

After that, I went to one more shop. Didn't tell him about the previous diagnoses, just explained the symptoms. He also said it was the AC compressor - and that it sounded like one of the freon lines was plugged up or something.

I'm surprised about the compressor, because I just had the whole compressor / AC accumulator replaced (and had the lines flushed) less than two years ago. The replacement compressor wasn't remanufactured - it was new.

Here is a short video clip on youtube demonstrating the problem. You can hear the noise really clearly at about the 40 second mark:

So basically at this point, I'm trying to figure out how to move forward. Given the car's symptoms, which diagnosis do you trust more? Cooling fan? AC compressor? Something else? Help!

Thanks.

Re: 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport Makes Roaring noise with AC / Defrost On Sign In

That's an A/C compressor about to come apart. The thing that separates it from the fan is that the noise changes with engine RPM. The compressor speeds up and pushes higher pressure where the fan runs one speed all the time. It needs to be diagnosed with a set of A/C gauges to determine why it failed and not by any of those guys because none of them seem very knowledgeable in A/C repairs and diagnosis.

Thanks for your quick response. What you say makes a lot of sense.

I had the compressor installed in August 2010. So I'm going to call the shop that put in that compressor and see if it's still under warranty.

Don't change the compressor until he determines what took it out. They usually don't just randomly fail.

You know that is getting a, compressor, muffler hose, condenser, accumulator, orifice tube/line, and the lines and evaporator flushed out after they found out why it failed.

Either the high side was high for some reason and overheated the compressor, the system was run on a low charge and the oil didn't circulate through the system properly, got air in the system when it was recharged, or someone didn't put enough refrigerant oil in it.

I'm betting overcharge, lack of oil when charged or low air flow across the condenser.

Or just maybe they never repaired the last failure correctly and they have a plugged up condenser.

Re: 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport Makes Roaring noise with AC / Defrost On Sign In

When I get AC jobs that require a new compressor, I like to take the compressors apart to see what happened.

We did an ac job on a customer's s-10 twice. He bought his own parts, cheap chinese compressor, so we installed it at his request. It went about a year and came back locked up with the clutch and hub burnt up. He went and bought another compressor, condenser, accumulator, and orifice from the same company for us to install again. I just rolled my eyes and installed his parts as he requested. After I got done with it, I took the old compressor apart. What I found out was a pin on the drive shaft broke in half that drives the swash plate the pistons are connected to. There is a steel rod that the swash plate moves up and down on and the broken part of the pin came around against the rod and locked up the crankshaft, which burnt the front of the clutch off. The inside of the compressor was in good shape and there wasn't any metal in the oil. Just a cheap pin that someone over looked when they overhauled it in Hong Kong.

For what it's worth the compressor isn't a remanned one. It was new when I had it installed. Made by Compressorworks, Inc. Any opinions on that brand?

Haven't heard of them until just now. To be honest it is probably a good quality new compressor, but it was something else that caused it to fail.

It's the junk like Four seasons that you want to run away from. They don't call them 4 seasons for nothing...LOL.

They are a good brand. iIuse them all the time but if the job wasn't done correctly, even the best compressor won't survive. Everybody thinks they are A/C techs because they can bolt on parts but it takes a lot of knowledge to prevent future problems.

There are a number of them. Cold Air, and I think Bennett, Advance and even AZ carry them.

I'll have to let management know about them. Thanks. We've been having luck with Global.
