2003 Dodge Neon SXT Sign In

I recently bought a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT Manual. Im having problems shifting into gears when Im driving the car. When the car is stopped, but still on, I have no problem shifting into any gear. The clutch isnt slipping and when im driving the car and trying to shift it, sometimes the gears grind. Can someone help me figure whats wrong? Thanks

This is classic for an hydraulic clutch system failure, frequently a leak. Check that it's full with proper fluid and look for leaks.

It's behavior is that of NOT disengaging the engine from the trans which a clutch does. Downshifts would be harder, neutral to first hard to reverse probably a harsh grind if slow.

Car might roll forward in first on level ground with clutch to the floor all evidence plus a softer feel of the clutch pedal.

Common issue - some tricky to fix some not so bad. Ignoring it is damaging your transmission so don't wait,

That doesn't sound like a clutch problem to me. Sounds like possible driver error.

Re: 2003 Dodge Neon SXT Sign In

? By "when stopped" do you mean engine not running? It would shift then with no clutch linkage at all.
You may very well know how to drive standards for years like that. I've been a passenger of those with many more years that never got the hang of it as well.

Check that clutch is really disengaging as said above,

Which gears are grinding? Could have worn out syncros.

I can shift into gears with no problem when the engine is on but the car isn't moving.

Sounding more and more like driver error.

AL the synchros can't be bad.

If you double clutch, does the grinding stop or get better?

Re: 2003 Dodge Neon SXT Sign In

99% of people wouldn't know what double clutching is - maybe?

If this was a non synchronized trans from new it would shift into all gears while running and would have to time when you shift. I own one.

The "synchromesh" rings is actually accepted slang for called Balk or Baulk rings a bronze like sacrificial ring to stop gears so the mesh. All of them gone at once is unlikely unless it's been driven like a mule either by you or a prior owner.

Had a picture lined up of what they are I'll just try once probably won't show. In doing these you find or I have the shaft holding the gear is worn beyond spec so new doesn't solve it.

This whole problem may not be this stuff at all. Rule out the clutch linkage although now that isn't totally consistent with it working sitting still and now when moving?

Pic of little use what a typical "syncho" so call ring looks like.........

^^^^ If no show I won't try again,
