2003 Cavalier with wiring problems?? Sign In

I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS with keyless entry. On Tuesday I got home from work, locked the car and went inside. 10 minutes later the alarm went off, even though there was nothing/no one in the vicinity. Later that night while driving home from job #2 the dome light inside didn't go off when I started the car, like it usually did. When I'd stop at a stop sign, it'd come on again and stay on for 20 seconds or so, then go off again. The car alarm continues to go off randomly (I noticed it again this afternoon, no telling how many times it's done it when I'm not around). Normally when I hit the lock button twice on the keyless, the horn honks and the lights flash...but it hasn't worked since Tuesday evening. I'm thinking it's a wiring thing...any thoughts? Great big thanks in advance. This is the first the car has acted up. (Figures, since the warranty juuuust ran out) I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS with keyless entry. This is a wicked common problem with aftermarket stuff. Others may disagree but I would have the alarm system removed and wiring that was cut soldered and shrink wrapped back to original. They almost always cause problems and a real theif is going to get your car so I find them a waste of time, money and energy and then YOU are the one who can't drive the car!! T

It's not aftermarket though....that's the thing. It's the original alarm. And its the dome light too. Which leads me to think it's more than just the alarm.

It maybe one of the door switches that is not making a good contact or an intermittent one and the BCM (body control module) which controls dome lights and alarm thinks someone is opening or has opened a door.
Your best bet it to take the car in and have someone scan the BCM data as to whether the module is receiving the proper information.
Without the scan tool it could be a long drawn out procedure to find the problem.

Dan, that would make perfect sense! Why didn't I think of that?! My driver's side door sensor has been sticking since the winter...i figured it out when my stereo wouldn't go off when I opened the door like it was supposed to. That would make sense if it's still the problem. Thanks a ton, I'll try to clean the sensor so it slides more easily. Hopefully that'll help. Thanks again.

Sorry if I messed you up. Not used to factory alarms and see all these people buy this stuff and cut up OEM wiring. No doubt Dan has the right idea with the door switch. Can't say with a car that new but simple WD-40 may get you out of this or replace the switch which may be inside the door but is usually just a button switch in the door jam. Hang in there it's probably a simple fix. T
