My rendevous stared over heating on occasion. Ill start at my house and within 3 miles it overheats and gives me a hot coolant message. If I look at the coolant reservior it will be full . As the the engine cools the coolant migrates into the radiator.
If the engine does not overheat within the first two miles I can drive for miles with no issues.
I drove it for two weeks just lately with no issue but then it started to overheat today.
Any help would be appreciated

It's very common to have a blown head gasket on that particular engine. It consumes coolant and pumps combustion gasses into the cooling system.

Chasbo > Jump on that like YESTURDAY with competent help see if that engine is OK to fix. No, I/we can known takes in person checking.

I'd bet Hammer is right you'd notice from a cold start, hood open feel pressure in a larger hose build up right away before expansion via heat is why - strong clue of just what he said. If a cap on radiator you'll find it low don't go by recovery tanks could be too full?

Damage remains unknown better to know than not before stuck in this vehicle,

Tom

The confusing parts to me is that my coolant level is going down very little and the issue is intermittent.

Could it be that the gases are forcing the coolant out of the system and into the reservoir. Without the coolant it is overheating?

Could it be something else? such as the thermostat? It only happens after a cold start and doesn't happen everytime.

I've been called a lot of things but never a mechanic.

Thanks Chas

Coolant is being consumed into the combustion chamber at the same time hot exhaust gases are being pushed into the cooling system. Since the cooling system now is not sealed, the vacuum from cooling coolant will pull air instead of coolant from the reservoir leaving large air pockets in the cooling system. You cannot even trust your temp gauge because if the sensor is in an air pocket, it cannot read air and shows a cooler than actual temp.

Turn your heater on when engine is hot and if you don't get hot air, it means you have air pockets in the system.
