2003 Blazer fuel gauge inconsistent

I drive a 2003 Chevy Blazer and I am having issues with the fuel gauge giving me very inconsistent readings. I have run out of gas a couple of times due to being fooled by the reading on the gauge. Can anyone suggest what this might be? Is this something that can be done by joe blow car owner, or is this a mechanic-type repair?

The sender inside the tank is a common failure. The additives in the fuel deteriorates them.
