2002 ford escape 2.0 5spd Engine Swap Sign In

This task is way over my head as far as mechanical knowhow. I have a 2002 ford escape 2.0 5 speed that I want someone else to put an engine in. What other engines could I buy that would work in this vehicle. My engine is weak I think losing compression. What engine can I replace it with and how much of a price tag will it be. There is a youtube video where a guy has a toyota 1MZ V6 3000CC. Would a mechanic know how to put this engine in.

NO - Exact same engine even if there were changes within the model year it must be right or a forever nightmare. I also suggest finding out if you really need a whole engine or just something on the one you have vs a total bail out on that one just yet,

Are you kidding? Don't even think about attempting that. You have a computer operated powertrain that is engineered to run one specific engine and only one engine, not to mention it's totally against Federal law to do that.

It could be done for about a billion bucks. Just re-engineer the entire car, weight distribution all drivetrain controls and make a few dozen of them for crash testing at every possible angle and emission tested under all conditions known on earth - did I miss anything?

Re: 2002 ford escape 2.0 5spd Engine Swap Sign In

My 4cyl escape has no power on hills even in low gears. Ok, so I bought a compression tester kit and when I pulled my plugs 3 of the 4 had fresh unburned oil on the threads. The one closest to where I add oil had alot of oil on it - not from me spilling oil I don't think. When I bought this vehicle recently I noticed the last guy who changed the oil overfilled - enough to make me drain almost a quart to get back down to the max level. My compression test readings were all really close - like 182, 185, 182, 186ish. Does this mean my catalytic converter is clogged causing me to lose power. People have told me escapes are cat cloggers - at least the V6's. Any help and I would appreciate.

Oil on the threads of plugs isn't hard mechanical engine but usually spilled, valve cover gasket and or if plugs thru covers leaks there and crankcase ventilation may have pressure - either PCV system or excessive blow-by in the engine which would show almost always as oily plugs where they burn not the threads.

IMO compression seems like it should run OK by that alone and suggest you seriously consider dealing with this OE engine. Lack of power could be clogging converter which could be tested for restriction or even code reading may damn the thing.

Generally unless exterior damage to converters they can last a very long time. If overloaded eating up unburned fuel or oil it can kill it and plug it.

Your oil change with as you said not quite a quart overfilled should not (never say never) have been causing all this.

Again - so far I think you have an engine to work with not replace and would test out and decide on a few repairs to it vs changing it out just yet,

That's not a blown engine. That's a leaking valve cover. Replace the gasket with the tube seals and that problem will be solved.
