2002 chevy prizm-engine light is on

 hello i have a 2002 chevy prizm, and the engine light is on. car is running great. i just need to know how to extract the diagnostic codes. WITHOUT A SCANNER AND A PAPER CLIP. and auto zone and kragen do not help with scanning, im in calfornia and they are not allowed to do that any longer.
i also have a 2004 dodge stratus that had its engine light on and i had it do a self diagnostic so i could get the codes, and i put the ignition on acc like two times then pushed in the trip odometer and started scanning itself and allowed me to write the codes down, but this chevy wont do that

You’re not doing to get codes out of anything 1996/97 or newer; not without some form of code reader or scan tool.
Don’t ask me why; that’s, just the way it is, sorry?
But then again why am I saying sorry?
Like one of my instructors; told me many years ago.
We didn’t design it, we didn’t built it, we didn’t sell it, we didn’t buy it; we’re here to try and fix it.
Only technicians will likely understand or appreciate that statement.
