Hello all,

Car is a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 2.7

Bought a used car and the speedometer and odometer don't work. I know pretty much nothing about cars but I'm trying to take this opportunity to fix things myself and learn. I've been able to do a few things and now I want to address this issue.

I saw online that it could be the speed sensor. But before I go out and spend the money on the part I want to be as sure as possible. Is there anyway to know for sure that this is the issue? Or in other words, is there any thing I can personally do without taking it into a mechanic to know if this is the issue.

My girlfriend suggested we get a code reader (not just for this issue, but any future issues our two cars may have). But would a code reader help in a case where the Check Engine light isnt coming on?

Lastly, not sure if it would be connected, but the cruise control doesn't work either. I'm not concerned with that now, just didn't know if the three could be related.

Thanks

Admirable.....

Don't waste money on a code reader when all parts store will read codes for free.
Stop by one of them and have them check to see if any codes are stored, even if light is not on......

I would invest the money that you want to spend on a code reader and have a shop at least diagnose the problem for you and then you can research and see if it's something you can repair yourself.

Note: There is a huge difference between the code reader you want to buy and the ones parts stores use compared to the high end scan tools dealers and shops use....Just an FYI

Thanks for the reply Double J. I didn't realize I could take the car to a parts store and have them scan for free. I appreciate it. I'll go ahead and do that.

So I took it to a parts store and no codes showed up with my car. Once again, not knowing much about cars but I would still assume it's the speed sensor as I read online that this car from that time period has a history of this issue. Is it possible that it could be this and not issue a code?

If so, any tips on changing this? It seems that the location is very different depending on the car. So I'll need to find the placement of my specific speed sensor.

The speed sensor is usually monitored by the PCM so you should be seeing a code if you had a bad sensor.

Does the cruise control work?

The engine control module gets the vehicle speed from the right front wheel speed sensor and the vehicle speed sensor on the transaxle. The speedometer and cruise control get the vehicle speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor on the transaxle. You may need to get a scan tool that can read data stream information to see if the vehicle speed sensor signal is reaching certain modules. If you have a lab scope, you can also check for the vehicle speed signal on pin 11 of the data link connector. The signal should be a square wave that changes in frequency in relation to vehicle speed. You may be able to see if a signal is present using a volt meter, but just understand that your not going to see the full amplitude of the signal using a volt meter.

Thanks for the replies people.

Yeah we didn't get any sort of code at all from the car.

Also, the cruise control in fact does not work. So the odometer doesn't work, the speedometer doesn't work (no bouncing, just stays at 0) and cruise control does not work as well.

tach and fuel gauge work? yes - then
there is a problem with VSS sensors failing, google "2002 Hyundai Santa Fe VSS" lots of info on R&R VSS

One more question: would this show a code on a code reader? I'm a bit confused because someone above mentioned that a speed sensor issue should show up in the code reader. Thanks.

Does your SF have ABS or TCS?

OK regrouping -
Are either of those lights on?
the sensor is part of ABS system, located front wheel sensor - RS i think, The code for this would NOT show up on the free scans as they are limited, scanner will not show ABS module, C , U, or B codes.

Neither of the lights are on. I don't have any sort of lights on when I'm driving.

With TCS and ABS the sensor is part of the ABS system - the scan will not display C series -C1203 - that is why there is no codes showing.
right front WSS (wheel speed sensor)

Thank you so much for the help. So just to make sure I have the right part, it should be the second one on this page:

http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/hyundai,2002,santa+fe,2.4l+l4,1386525,brake/wheel+hub,abs+wheel+speed+sensor,1912

Would this be an easy(ish) fix for a newbie at cars? Or should I not take the chance and get someone to do it for me?

Why are you guessing when you could be testing to see if there is a signal?? The speedometer and cruise control get their speed signals from the sensor on the transmission. A bad wheel speed sensor that doesn't produce a signal should be causing the ABS lamp to come on and a wheel speed sensor code to be set.

Hello everyone

I just wanted to reply and let every one know what the issue was (if anyone cares). Let me preface this by saying that I know nothing about this stuff and so if the mechanic I worked with seems like an idiot, or something doesn't make sense, it's likely me not telling the story correctly.

I took the car to a mechanic as I was too nervous to do anything myself. He tested the wheel speed sensor and it worked completely fine. So the issue was in the cluster. He told me the company he gets clusters from are closed on weekends and he would call me on Monday after talking to him about it.

Monday he called me and said that it was one of the more informational mornings he has had in awhile. He called the cluster place and when they heard it was a 2002 Santa Fe they told him to hang up and call Hyundai. They told him that in those early 2000's, Hyundais had weird things about them and it was difficult to judge the issue at this point. He called Hyundai and Hyundai told him it was a 50/50 chance that it was either the cluster or the transmission speed sensor. I took the car in and he checked the transmission speed sensor and it seemed to be the culprit.

The next day when getting that fixed, they were running into issues. Basically, they couldn't find the transmission speed sensor. The pictures that Hyundai sent them weren't accurate. They ended up finding it in the opposite spot... something the mechanic attributed to the car possibly being a "split-VIN" (a term I've never heard of).

So we changed out the transmission speed sensor and all three things work fine now. And just for fun, the cluster people called the mechanic just to let them know what the new cluster would have cost: around $700.

Thanks for follow up however late. It can help another as archives.

Take it this is fixed now and can close out thread. I don't know what was meant by "split VIN" unless this is a Salvage Vehicle meaning one vehicle made from two wrecked ones type of thing? Barely matters now at age if it's working fine now all is good.

Thread can be re-opened by YOU by any moderator at your request,

By "split VIN" I think he means a model year that used some parts from the previous or later year.
