Vehicle Details:

YR: 2002
Make: Mitsubishi
Model: Montero Sport LS
Engine: 3.0
Mileage: 90,600

Issue:

I have a somewhat older 2002 Mitsu Montero that has suddenly started acting up. Not sure what problem is. Here is list of the things that are happening just recently:

The car generally starts OK, but at times it seems to bog down (not sure how to describe, but feels like it's working a bit more to get started/doesn't start as strong). My battery is only a year + old. It did run out once, and I had to re-charge it (left lights on).

While driving the other day, out of the blue/when its about to shift, the RPMs run higher than normal. Then, right before it shifts, they shoot up a bit higher quickly...then it shifts. It sort of jerks a bit when it shifts as well. It does that in every gear it seems.

When I turn on the A/C, the car starts to get bogged down, and some of the dash lights come on (parking brake/SRS/battery). The auto windows also run a bit groggy/slow as well. The radio display went completely black (it normally has a blue display). The A/C fan runs slower, and is not blowing cold air like it normally does.

There is also a 'burnt' smell that's been there for some time as well. I thought maybe it was burnt oil from a leak that i have, but after some research, thought it could be the alternator, etc?

I'm not a car guy, so have no idea what's going on. From what I read, it seemed the alternator might be the culprit (?), but other than that, I have no clue...

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I hope to get it into a shop this week.

Thanks!

Probably would be a good idea to have the battery and charging system tested first to be sure they are good before going after electrical demons.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks for reply...yeah, good call/I'll probably have some testing done before doing anything crazy.
