Hey guys. I have a 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe with a 2.4 liter engine and 160,000 miles.

Today I was driving some windy wet roads and ended up hydroplaning into a ditch with some rocks in it. I called a tow truck and they were able to get my car out of the ditch. I drove it a few hundred feet and back to make sure it was driving alright and it was fine.

I was able to drive the car another 40 miles or so home with no problems. I did feel a little jerk as it shifted once, but didn't think much of it as I thought it might be from the rain on the roads or something like that.

I just got back in it and as I was driving it was having a lot of trouble getting into gear. the rpms would jump up to 3,000 or so and then it would kick into gear. And the whole car would shake as it did it. It happened every time I would put my foot back on after allowing it to idle. I was able to pull in a parking lot. I turned the car off and restarted it and it just couldn't get into gear. Even when in reverse I would have to push the gas until the rpms shot up and it would kick into gear again.

I understand I have to take it to a mechanic tomorrow, but I was trying to get an idea of what the issue might be before I go so I might know what it's going to set me back and to better describe what could be wrong.

A friend suggested that I could've cracked the transmission fluid container in the accident and it finally just all leaked out. I'm hoping it's something that's an easy fix like that. Thanks for any help.

Your friend is probably correct but since you keep trying to drive it, don't be so sure it hasn't done further damage. You can't drive it low on fluid like that or you will do severe internal damage.
