2002 Grand Am, have to arc spark plug to start? Sign In

Hi,
I have a very weird problem with my car which is a 2002 grand am v6. It starts most the time, but if I turn it off and try to restart it in under 2 or 3 hrs of sitting, I have to arc one of the spark plugs on the frame of the car for it to start. I found this out because after one time of not starting, I just wanted to check if it was getting spark by arcing it on frame of car and it started. If it sits for over 3 hrs, it usually starts right up. Anyone I talk to does not understand why arcing a plug on the frame of car would make it start. I have been doing this for several months and it works every time. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

jason

3.4L?

Check engine light on?

I haven't run into anything like that before. Do you actually take the spark plug out or do you hold the end of the wire to the engine block?

It is 3.4L. Check engine light isnt on. I just pull the boot off the plug and hold it to anything metal. I have no clue why this would start the car. I discovered it on accident when checking it for spark. I have to start it this way maybe 4 to 5 times a week.

Sounds like your car has Frankensteinitus.

I honestly don't know what to say about that one. It could be a fuel pressure bleed off problem causing delayed start or maybe the passlock system is enabled. Shorting out the secondary and it starting up could be a coincidence.

Too bad you don't live close to here. I'd like to check that one out.

Well thanks for responding. Maybe someone else experienced this problem. Kind of sucks because I would like to just sell the car, but its going to be hard to sell with this problem. Thanks

Probably wouldn't hurt to rule out those other things to be sure they aren't really the cause of the no start.

If you going to sell the car you could sell it with a set of these in the trunk:
