2002 Ford Escort won't start
270000 miles
Fuel pump leaks a little but if you turn the key to on,wait a few seconds, turn it off, repeat a few times, it runs fine. Only a problem when cold.
Also transmission is a little messed up, when cold you shift to drive and it shifts to neutral. If you put it in reverse and wait for it to jerk back a little, then put it in drive, it's fine. Only a problem when cold. Super cold today. Started usually, with above problem. Ran for a few minutes, idled fine. Walked away for a few minutes, started sounding kinda funny, then stalled. Battery's good, lights come on, but it won't even try to turn over. Any suggestions?

You have quite the list of issues and PLENTY of miles.

OK - Just for now it isn't even trying to crank and unusually cold out but was running then left it along to find it this way.

Any chances there was little or no antifreeze in this? Check to see if engine can turn by hand by crank bolt or made a mess of water or dirty water while you weren't looking. If it overheated from a frozen radiator (is first and doesn't circulate) is could be total trouble and need to know.

If not I can't suggest you leave a car with a leaking fuel pump and use at all so time to decide if it will run again at all what you want to do with this car,

Any trouble codes stored in the engine computer? What do you mean the fuel pump is leaking? The pump is inside the fuel tank. You don't hear anything when you turn the ignition to start?

Don't know about codes, and the fuel leaks from the line back into the tank slowly, so after a few hours you have to turn the key to on so the pump will prime the line. You just have to do it multiple times to refill the fuel line. And no noise at all when you turn it to start, not even that click that means the battery is dead

Turn on your headlamps and then attempt to crank the engine. Do the headlamps go out?

Not completely but pretty close. It also made a sluggish attempt at turning over, although it's been sitting for twelve hours and it was nowhere near actually starting.

You should have your battery tested and fully charged. Also make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. At least eliminate those as possibilities.

Well, took a look at the connections and must have not been paying attention the first time cause they were rusted up real bad. Cleaned them up, jumped it, has run fine since. Don't know why it stalled but it's running fine now. Thank you all!!

It could stall if it couldn't deliver or get charged up by alternator if connection that weak would stall out. What you may not know now is if it harmed anything and would check you charging system - total check including condition of the battery,
