2002 Ford Ranger 4x4. Front right wheel chirps / squeaks Sign In

Ok here's some information about the problem:
-sound comes from front right
-squeaks with every turn of the wheel in the same spot
-seems to be louder when wet
-when heavy brakes are applied, sound changes to a rubbing rather than a chirping
-squeaks regardless of breaking or not breaking, but brakes have an effect on it.
-tends to stop squeaking when turning left and get louder when turning right
-I pulled off the front right wheel and found the wheel bearing seemed to turn fine, however the rotor was warped. I had the rotor turned which seemed to help the problem but not solve it.
-a couple shops have assured me its not a brakes problem.

Any ideas what it could be? Thanks for any help

These ones can be tough. I would look on the back side and make sure nothing is rubbing on the axle. It's a little work but you could swap the rotors and bearing to see if the noise moves.....

Was there any event you can remember that lead up to this noise happening?

Ya I can give a little more information... that front right wheel has always had the squeak (its like a bird chirping every time the wheel turns) since I bought the car. I took it to a ford dealership, and he said I had a deteriorated CV boot and the grease had all come out or something like that, and was trying to get me to replace it but I wasn't ready to. In the end, he told me he just greased it back up and that would solve things for a while. The squeak went away for a long time after that, but looking at my cv joint I saw absolutely no signs of deterioration and it looked like no one had ever taken the boot off.

Anyways the sound eventually came back, and when I really ran into complications was when I was coming down a hill turning hard left and bumped pretty good when the ground went from slope to level. I bent the front right wheel I'm pretty sure, and the squeaking problem has been worst ever since then.

If the joint had lost it's grease and was making noise and putting new grease in it with a new boot solved the problem for a while then you are looking at replacing that axle.

Those joints are machined fitted with tight tolerances. When they go bad they either make noise or vibrate. You will never get any play out of it or be able to see anything wrong with it with your eye. If you let it get to the point where you could get play out the joint by hand, it would've been making so much racket but then it would've already been obvious where the problem was............

I'm not sure if thats the case though. He didn't say he replaced the boot and he definitely would've told me if he had.
