2002 Ford Explorer won't start, help!

2002 Ford Explorer won't start, help!

my 2002 ford explorer xlt won't start. It's a 2WD, 4.0L, 6 cylinder engine, 180,000 miles. had some trouble with the radio turning itself on and off for awhile, removed radio and checked connections, seemed ok. Vehicle started and ran fine until one morning it just would not turn over. Removed and had tested: the battery, starter, altenator. All test ok. Had some corrosion on the positive battery cable, removed and cleaned. Checked ignition and starter fuses and relays under the hood. When you turn the key, the ignition relay clicks, but nothing else happens, i don't think i hear the solenoid click on the starter, and the motor doesn't turn over. Won't jump start either. Please help. Thats about everything i know to check.

Is this an Automatic or manual transmission?

I would check to see if the solenoid is getting power to the single small wire (the S wire I believe) when the key is turned to start
If not it could be a bad transmission range sensor or the relay, and also try putting the truck in different gears when trying to start it.
Are you sure all the fuses and relays are good?

I'll check the voltage on the small wire, thanks. I checked the ignition fuse and relay and the starter fuse and relay in the fuse box next to the battery under the hood, they all checked out ok. I don't know of any others that I need to check. I also tried the gear shift in different gears and moving it around in park, no luck. Thanks for the info I'll check that transmission range sensor.

To test if the range sensor is working is simple.
When in park and you try to start you will hear therelays and solenoids click lick you describe.
Put the truck in gear and try to start, you should hear silence. That means the range sensor is disabling the ignition circuit b/c the car is in gear.
If your not hearing anything in park either then it could be the range sensor

I have discovered I have a PATS problem. When I turn the ignition to on or start the THEFT LED on the dash flashes rapidly and stays on. I only have one key and I am not sure how to fix the security problem.

Thats gonna require some dealer diagnosis with equipment to match.Youll have to tow it.

Some locksmith shops can cut and program keys. Might be worth a shot.
