I recently bought a used 2002 Chevy Malibu. Has a V6 3.1 Liter and around 123, 300 miles. And ever since I bought it a week ago I've noticed that the turn signals are unpredictable. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. All I know for sure is they work when I first start the car up. After doing some research, I decided to replace the turn signal switch, which also has the wiper switch connected. But it still is doing the same thing. So there must be something else going on. I did some more research and the one thing that keeps popping up in connection is the hazard switch. Some people suggested pushing the switch to fix the turn signal problem. And I've done that with mixed results. And after doing some more research I think the hazard switch might need to be replaced. I also found out that there was an investigation into this specific problem but no formal recall. So I don't know what the next step would be. Also the wipers only seem to work at one speed. I'm still learning about the car so I don't know if that's normal or not. They definitely work though. I will be taking the car to a local Chevy service center to have it serviced in relation to a recent recall that has to do with the ignition. So I thought about asking them when I take it in. But that isn't till Tuesday. So if someone out there can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Its probably the Hazard Switch. GM issued a Special Policy Bulletin on these. A Special Policy is not a recall tho. Recalls permit the dealer to repair the vehicle regardless if the symptoms are present or not. A Special Policy only permits the dealers to repair the vehicle if the concern is present. And it has limitations. It basically extends the warranty on that said part for an extra amount of years or miles. In this case, it was for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Here is an excerpt from the SP with the Vin breaks and part numbers Subject:Special Policy Adjustment-Turn Signal/Hazard Warning Flashers #04098A - (01/11/2006) Models:1999-2002 Chevrolet Malibu 1999-2002 Oldsmobile Alero 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass 1999-2002 Pontiac Grand Am This bulletin is being revised to include 2001-2002 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, and Pontiac Grand Am vehicles. Due to part availability, it is anticipated that customers will not be notified until late April 2006. In the meantime, should a customer bring in a 2001-2002 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, or Pontiac Grand Am vehicle because the turn signal/hazard warning flashers are inoperative, repair the vehicle as described in this bulletin and submit the claim using the labor code found in this bulletin. Please discard all copies of bulletin 04098 issued December 2004. Condition Some customers of 1999-2002 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, Pontiac Grand Am, and 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass may have turn signal/hazard flashers that become inoperative. Special Policy Adjustment This special policy covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. For 1999-2000 vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after December 23, 2004 are covered by this special policy and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to December 23, 2004 must be submitted to the Service Contract provider. For 2001-2002 vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after January 11, 2006 are covered by this special policy and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to January 11, 2006 must be submitted to the Service Contract provider. Vehicles Involved Involved are certain 1999-2002 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, Pontiac Grand Am, and 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass built within the following VIN breakpoints: Year Division Model From Through 1999 Chevrolet Malibu X6213206 X6278263 2000 Chevrolet Malibu Y6100001 Y6239268 2001 Chevrolet Malibu 16272052 16281822 1M630651 1M684672 2002 Chevrolet Malibu 2M500001 2M729093 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass X6332770 X6343584 1999 Oldsmobile Alero XC002988 XC435868 2000 Oldsmobile Alero YC000007 YC372282 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 1C242103 1C286657 2002 Oldsmobile Alero 2C100001 2C321946 1999 Pontiac Grand Am XC567634 XC585563 XM893151 XM945549 2000 Pontiac Grand Am YC500001 YC535879 YM700011 YM799794 2001 Pontiac Grand Am 1C242518 1C669963 2001 Pontiac Grand Am 1M632783 1M684665 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 2C100021 2C321943 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 2M500008 2M729091 Parts Information Parts required to complete this special policy are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Thanks so much for your help. Do you think when I take it to the service center on Tuesday I can get them to fix it even though it's not a recall issue? Or would I have to pay out of pocket?

Doesn't hurt to ask but I doubt it being its way past the parameters of the warranty. Its going to be out of pocket . Pop one in yourself, aftermarket switches are inexpensive and relatively easy too install

Earlier this morning I ended up just getting a new switch and putting it in. But the thing now is that even though the hazard lights seem fine, the turn signal blinkers are blinking a little faster than they were before. But they didn't go out when I took it for a drive. And all the outside lights work fine. So I don't know if I need to worry or not.

Sounds like a success to me. Little faster than intermittent it's probably as they should be? If all works and legal this is done, T

I would have to see it to tell if they are too fast now or were too slow before. Best bet is either to compare them with a like vehicle or get an opinion from someone in the know, like at the repair facility, not the guy at the parts store. Good thing is the work now

Thanks again guys. Really appreciate it. I talked to my roommate who knows about cars and has worked on them and he said that it's working fine. No problem. So I'll just keep an eye on it.
