2002 Chevy Malibu - purge valve selonoid Sign In

2002 Chevy Malibu
v6
140K miles

I have a DTC P0440. I was told by GM it was either the gas cap or purge valve selonoid. I replaced the gas cap and reset the code and no luck. I am trying to find the purge valve selonoid in my vehicle. I believe I have found it but no one at the auto parts stores has the part to verify. Thanks for your assistance!

if gm told you that only the gas cap or purge solenoid could be the problem......they are wrong.could be a large leak in any of the evap lines or canister even in rare cases a leaking gas tank or a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor can trigger a false code .Best to test with a smoke machine.take a bright light and inspect all the evap lines.....besides that all you can do is start replacing things which is not the right way to do it and you could replace all components like purge solenoid, canister, gas cap and still have same problem.

Hello,

I had my car smoked out. I originally had both a P0442 (which was a small leak) and P0440. They fixed the bad hose that was leaking and the P0442 went away. Now it just registers the P0440. When they continued to test after replacing the hose, they said they could find no leak and suspected the selonoid was not opening and closing properly. On the test unit, it was, and the check engine light went away. When I drive the vehicle the light comes back on.

well then if they stated that then take a chance and replace the purge solenoid.the pcm monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor for vacuum decay. The light may come back on.you are only going on what gm has tested.they could have hooked scan tool up and commanded the solenoids open and closed and looked at the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage....this is probably not an intermittent sticking solenoid code.did they pressure test gas cap?some cars have the capibility to run the evap monitor in the service bay to see if it passed with hose piched close near solenoid.
