2001 saturn L200 has problems starting in humid or rainy weather Sign In

I have a 2001 Saturn L200. For years it has been giving me trouble where in humid weather it won't start. It will turn over and attempt to start but wont finish firing. Usually after exactly 10-12 minutes it will start and run perfect. It works fine every winter, then when spring comes the issues arise again. I had a timing chain or belt break a few years back and now have a cavalier engine in it. And it still does this. I went to saturn and they said i need a ignition cylinder and housing for $800 and it "might" fix the problem. Everytime I talk to a mechanic they say "ignition Housing what's that?". So I don't think this is a problem with the engine since it has a new one. And it does start eventually... everyone always says it's my fuel pump, but my mechanic friend at work says with a fuel pump it either works or it doesn't. He thinks I may have electrical problems and he says they are hard to track down and he doesn't have the equipment in his home garage to do that. Any ideas? Right now it's been all day and I can't get it to start. I think it's finally done. Also the last few weeks I have noticed the shifter lights blink and it looks like it's in reverse, but it's really in drive, or sometimes they flash which is another reason my firend thinks it's a electrical issue. Just hoping there's a common issue that may be know with this model. It's a Saturn L200 4 Door Sedan automatic transmition. Thanks.

security light on or flashing when it doesn't want to start?

I believe they are talking about the passlock sensor in the ignition switch housing.

No nothiing like that. Just the lights in the middle by the shifter blink and move around. But they dont seem to be connected to it not starting cause that is normally when it rains.

I guess you need to find out what is missing when it doesn't want to start. Check for spark, check fuel pressure, and injector activity. You could also take a spray bottle of water and spray around electrical connectors and wiring under the hood to see if you can get the problem to duplicate.

The transmission indicator lights flashing around could be a problem with the trans range switch or the electronic PRNDL module. The PRNDL module uses voltage sensing circuits to determine which gear the transmission range switch is in so it can light up the appropriate indicator. The engine computer(aka PCM) also has voltage sensing circuits that run to the transmission range switch because the PCM has to know what the position the manual valve in the transmission is in.

You really need a scan tool to figure out what the problem could be. When the indicators are flashing, you can use a scan tool to monitor the switch status in the PCM to see if it is doing the same. If so, that could indicate a problem with the transmission range switch, range switch ground circuits or the circuits going to the PCM. If the PCM switch statuses are good, then you could be looking at a PRNDL module problem.
