2001 ford expedition losing oil/flapping noise Sign In

2001 ford expedition 4wd v8 5.4l
2 months ago i noticed i started using alot of oil, about 2 quarts a month. there are 188k miles on it. three or 4 weeks ago it started making a clicking noise. to a female non-mechanic it sounds as if something is flapping. it has gotten worse, i hear it when i start the car, then right before it shifts up the noise starts then subsides once it shifts. its a rapid flapping noise. i have asked a couple of "shade tree mechanics" and have heard everthing from exhaust, to rods to valve covers. the oil loss is not visible... like there is no evidence of it leaking on my driveway.

thx

Well unfortunately for me nothing really jumps out but that is a good description....

Using that much oil in that time frame, if it was an external leak, it should be putting oil on the ground so either it's burning it or there's an internal leak in the oil cooler system....

I know I'm not much help on this but since you aren't doing this yourself the best thing at this point would be to take it in and have it checked by someone who is familiar with this system. A backyarder might not be the best option here.

It's very probable the oil consumption and noise are related. The fact that the noise is getting worse obviously means the problem is progressing.... With a lot of automotive problems, once you notice a problem a keep driving it, usually makes the repair more expensive.
