2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara... engine keeps shutting off Sign In

2.5 liter engine... 120,000 miles

traveling in NYC right now and the car has decided to start messing up.
problem first became evident during a snowstorm when the car just completely died.
got it jumped and took it to autozone where they pronounced the battery dead, got it replaced, car started up fine
then it started rumbling and quaking at stop signs, and shutting off. at first it would come back on fine and i'd continue on.
but now it has started shutting off while i'm in the middle of driving down the block.
i wanted to avoid getting it fixed until I got home to Kentucky, but it's evident now that I'm going to have to take it in before I make a 15 hour drive.
is this probably just the alternator?

I try but can't know everything. New battery may have reset everything and the vehicle just needs to relearn by miles and some time. Can't know that for sure but at 10 years old now it was remembering things that now are lost and might just need more driving it now,

Update: Took it in and the diagnostic showed that it's the car's computer that is "fried" according to the mechanic. This seem logical? They're putting a new one in.

If he's using that term literally, I would want to know what fried it so as to prevent it from happening again.
