My 2001 Saturn SL1 (80,000 miles) has been having issues with intermittent starting. The first time it happened was 2 months ago. I drove to work, and a few hours later I went to start it, and nothing (see more info below). So I called my wife and she picked me up, and I came back the next morning and it started right up. It started up every time for about 3 weeks and then it happened again. The next day though, it started up again. A few weeks later, it happened again; this time it wouldn't start after 2 days. I had it towed to the shop, and (of course) it started right up when it got there. So they couldn't duplicate the problem. Everything tested ok. But it happened again this morning, and now I'm trying to figure out what's wrong myself.
When this happens, the engine does not even try to turn over. The dash lights come on (and the radio and blower work). I do not hear any clicking noises, but I do hear a "hum" for about 2 or 3 seconds. I don't think my car has any security system. The headlights do not dim when I try to start it.
I have read threads where other people are having the similar issues. Some people have suggested: ignition switch, starter, solenoid, neutral safety switch, security system. I don't know a ton about cars, but I would like to at least figure out what the problem is myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Next time it happens, get a hammer and rap on the starter body. If this gets it to turn over, replace the starter assembly......

I read your post concerning the starting problem with your Saturn. I am having the same issue. I have replaced the starter, and ignition switch. Also, the battery is good. But this has not resolved the issue. Did you find a resolution to your problem. If so, I would appreciate the information concerning a fix for the problem.

Hi, I have the same problem, I used my car yesterday with no problems, but this morning when I started up, it ran for 2 seconds and it stopped.
try to start again, and it won't do anything, no click, nothing... did you find out what it was?
