2001 LDV convoy 2.5l DI (timing belt whoops) Sign In

2001
LDV
Convoy
2.5L DI
79,000km

Hello i was doing the timing belt and after getting the new belt on with all the marks lining up with the marks i had made i accidentally turned the engine over counter clockwise (not clockwise like in the instructions) i got one full revolution with no feeling of valve on piston and when going another half turn 180 degrees the bolt on the camshaft sprocket ( the one i was using to turn the engine over counter-clockwise) came loose, i re-tightened it by leaving the belt on and going clockwise but now when i turn the engine either clockwise or anti-clockwise it reaches a spot where it feels as though a valve is touching a cylinder and i cannot turn further without forcing it. ( which i know not to) I can move the crankshaft and belt and other sprockets forward and backwards about 70-80 degrees but then i feel resistance again. Have i messed up the relationship from the injection pump to the camshaft, and if so how would i go about getting it back to where the engine is at the 3 timing marks (actually holes in the injection pump and camshaft sprockets and one more to the right of the starter motor) without bending a valve? Thanks for any advise given.

The only reason they tell you not to rotate it in that direction is because the tensioner only works in one direction and rotating it the other direction causes slack and lets it jump time.

That is likely what has happened. You will need to time it all over again which may require moving the cam first to eliminate the contact. You likely didn't do any damage if you didn't force anything.

That worked great and you were right! Unfortunately now she wont start, i turned the engine over like 14-18 times by hand to finally get the autotensioner in correct position. I'm now wondering if i flooded it (if thats posssible) it has an injection pump connected to the timing belt. I got the engine to turn over (with starter motor only, tryed 6 times only 2-5 seconds a time and waited 5 minutes between each 3 trys) but still not running, it has been sitting and not turned on for a month (installed new battery in febuary 2019) but ran at least once every two weeks while repairing for MOT (uk emmisions test) so i took out the battery and have that on charge as well. Basically wondering if i could have flooded it and if the new battery doesn't start it does that mean i most likely need new valves? The 2.5l turns over smooth with all the belts moving and i dont hear any loud pings like i broke off any valves but hard to tell.

Also this is probably a stupid question but would the timing belt turn 720 with slightly bent valves or would it lock up?

Once a valve has bent over it's not stopping the piston any longer so now the engine will rotate freely. The damage is already done if that is actually the case.

So i guess it's up to the battery and starter motor and then compression afterwards if that doesn't work! Thanks again Hammer!

Just double check your timing marks and then one more time.

PS, I deleted your duplicate post.

After i backed off the camshaft to where the pistons no longer made contact (it had only skipped one tooth) and i could turn the engine back to the original timing, I quadruple checked the timing marks before reassembly (adjusting the injection pump as stated below), turning 720 each time to make sure they all went back to where i had used engine marking glue to mark the sprockets to the engine.

The only one that was the slightest bit off was the injection pump every time was like 1.5-2mm off but i loosened the inner bolts (as was stated in Alldata europe edt) and adjusted to where all the timing bolts went into their respective holes

Unsure far from that, i'll take your advise and strip her down again (i don't mind doing the work) and recheck the marks. I just don't know why she isn't starting now, again i don't think i bent a valve because their was* still resistance before moving the camshaft back a notch, but haven't compression tested the engine yet. I was also wondering if i could have flooded her turning over the engine so many times.
