do i have a separate radiator cap or simply the overfill container? never seen a radiator without a cap? i am burning water like crazy--possibly cracked something...4 degrees here last night...

The over flow container is actually a pressure bottle and that is the only cap for this system.

If the cap was missing you probably didn't hurt anything but replace it now. The Anti-freeze doesn't care so much about pressure for cold but it's a system made for all weather. Just FYI 50/50 or pre mixed anti-freeze is a good choice. If too strong it can cause problems - especially in warmer weather. - T

well, the anti freeze is going somewhere but doesnt seem to be leaking out of the car. im afraid it is burning up in the engine somewhere. we fill it and after a few hours to a day it is empty again and running hot. everything runs fine when there is antifreeze in it, and it doesnt seem to be coming out of the exhaust. maybe as simple as a thermostat? or a water pump? seems to run to well to be a cracked cylinder...i guess. dunno, still attempting to diagnose

If you are consuming that much it's going somewhere. Some leaks may no show up until engine is warmed up and running. A head gasket or fault in the head can burn coolant but at the rate you mentioned I would think you'd see a cloud of white smoke. Some is normal in cold weather. If you pull the spark plugs one may look either wet or super clean compared to others which is a sign of burning up antifreeze. Hope it simpler than that. - T

Chek out Autozone.com's RepairInfo section. It had diagrams and written instructions last year when I did the same thing.
