2000 Saturn SL1 electrical/ignition? problem Sign In

Hello

I Have a 2000 Saturn SL1.
Alternator and battery just replaced and test good but still having problems.

Symptoms
Car starts and "seems" fine with a boost.
Turn off ignition and guages do NOT reset (gas guage stays at half). Disconnecting battery does not help.
Try to start without a boost and nothing.. Put the booster cables back on and it jumps to life.

Have read much about BMS and ignition switches but opionions on other peoples problems have been conflicting so I wanted to post my own.

Any help apprecitated!!!

Thank you

If you car is starting with a jump, then there is no question that the battery is not delivering the power. This could be a connection issue or a charging system issue but the ignition switch has nothing to do with it. The first thing you want to do is test the charging voltage across the battery with the engine idling and no accessories on.

Thanks for your reply, i will give it a try.

What should it read? 12-14 volts at the negative/positive terminals with car idling?

Question, if it is charging ok when running what would I look for next? Bad ground???

thanks!

You should be getting between 13.5 and 14.8 volts at idle if it's charging OK. If you have that, concentrate on you battery and cable coneections.

Couple of things I should have mentioned for background.

I put a trickle charge on the battery overnight but it would not charge.

Also, when running after a boost there is one thing that is out of the oridinary.... when the engine warms up and the fan for the cooling system kicks in it does not shutdown, it just stays running, not sure if that could be a symptom of the root cause or not.

thanks again

Get your battery problems squared away before going any further.
