2000 Saturn SL1 Intermident staring problem Sign In

My 2000 Saturn SL has a probelm where it will not start sometimes, started out only once in a while... now it hasn't started in 18 hours. When I turn the key to "start" I here what I assume is the fuel pump in the back run, a clicking in the front near the glove box, the radio turns off, the dome light does not dim, and the starter makes no sound at all. It has happened when the car is hot one time at a gas station I waited a hour or so and it worked, another time after sitting for 3 hour it wouldn't start then 5 min later it did, and now it just isn't starting at all.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you catch it good and down as described try just tapping on body of starter and some at solenoid. It may kick right into working but just raises the odds of a bad starter.

Other test would be to see the trigger wire light up a test light, both wire and the stud. Connections should be known good but this could prove them not.

Intermittent like this stinks and IMO you are really just testing to beat the odds as if this will just behave after some given time you may never know for sure unless cleaning a connection, starter replacement or whatever is found causes it not to happen again for quite a while to be sure. If always engine temp sensitive so far there's a clue in that,

IMO that if it works puts odds of bad starter highly suspect as bad and reason to replace it.

Was that just chance or temporarily fixed it remains possible NOT the problem and may not work twice.

Plunger of solenoids may be sticky causing no sound or a connection reacted to the trick possible but I'd declare that a bad starter with its solenoid on top as an assy is the trouble. It might be stickier with heat that causes it with same suggestion that starter with all other things OK is the problem,

PS: BTW - any readers: If that trick doesn't work also doesn't mean a starter or motor is good....
