2000 Mercury Sable stalling?

2000 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 125000 miles
Every once in a while my car while not going very fast my car will stall, (not sure if that's the right word) but I can't accerlate. What I've done is switched between neutral and drive and sometimes that works, otherwise I have to put it in neutral and restart. It's only done this a few times in the past year and it happened twice the other day, but since then it's been fine. I changed the spark plugs awhile back because someone suggested that may help but obviously that was not the cause. The only other thing I thought of possibly is the fuel pressure regulator. Any ideas?

dlaw; Does the engine die? Or, just won't accelerate? I'm pretty certain that you rule out the fuel pressure regulator, regardless. Being an OBDII vehicle, I'd assume you may have a 'check engine' or 'service soon' lamp illuminated? If you do, have the trouble codes retrieved from most any large parts store and post it (them) here. If you haven't had the fuel filter changed in the past 20K miles, you may want to have it checked.

dlaw; Being a Ford, the most common cause of stalling, then restarting immediately, is a dirty IAC motor. The IAC (Idle Air Control) does just that. It is an electrically operated solenoid that opens to increase air flow, thereby increasing idle speed. If it can't react quick enough, the engine can stall. These can be cleaned, and be just fine, 90% of the time. Also, it seems that Ford fuel filters are more prone to plugging that some other manufacturers. With that said, if you haven't had an injector service done in the past 40K miles, it may be time. This is a maintenance 'thing' that gets overlooked. Fuel injectors are an electrical solenoid that open and close very rapidly. Some, have a fine mesh screen. They can, and do, get dirty and gummy which affects the spray pattern. When we get vehicles in that haven't had this service, most people will report back with increased fuel economy and performance. The procedure is done with a machine (MotorVac) and takes about 1.5 hrs to complete. We automatically clean the IAC and MAF sensor at the same time. If you have this done, make sure that they do that, as well. I'm not 'picking on' Fords. Every manufacturer has it's own ideosynchrisies. We just see this problem with Fords more often.
