I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee bought new and have taken very good care of, no wrecks, no major problems, all scheduled maintenance completed myself. It is 2 wheel drive with 6 cyl auto trans.
Stopped to c-store for coffee early am and came out to no crank. Gauges and dash lights came on for instant and then turned key, heard click but no crank/start. Also noticed (before got out to buy cup of joe that steering wheel did not lock as normally has done after turned car off.
Took battery to AutoZone for testing and was told battery is good with 89% charge. I asked them to start to 100% which they gladly did.
Towed SUV home and installed battery, checked terminals for proper connection to starter and fuses (both under dash and under hood) and all seem ok. Inserted key into ignition, dash lights and guages lit up, interior lights and headlights lit up like normal....turned key and click...no crank...lights and dash go dark and.....now I'm lost....

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

Other ends of battery cables need be perfect too. Battery can only do as much as the weakest link - starter takes a ton, lights little comparatively,

It's a bad connection somewhere that has to be found. It could be anywhere up to and including the ignition switch. Power and ground feeds travel through power distribution boxes and connections multiple times before reaching the ignition switch.
