2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts fine shuts off after a few seconds Sign In

I just replaced an ignition switch in a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee, Laredo. Prior to putting the switch in I left the jeep for 3 weeks without running. After installing the new switch I charged the battery fired up the Jeep only to find it ran for a few seconds and died(the jeep starts great just shuts off like it is starving for gas). I attempted to rev the engine which it did but just died. Someone told me to to spray a starter fluid into the intake , when I did the jeep would go to stall and then run as long as I fed it the fliud. Anyone have any ideas what I should try now??

Do you have any security light on or flashing when you try to start it? If not, have the fuel pressure read with a gauge.

Hello;

I checked out the jeep,you know usually I have a red light that flashes on my dash and it is not flashing could something be up with my anti-theft or security since I changed my ignition switch??

IDK - This begs lots of info. Why did the ignition switch need replacing to begin with?
Was the battery dead as you said you charged it to start it after 3 weeks?

Do you know how this security system is supposed to work if it works properly? It used to blink now it doesn't?

Aftermarket set up or what?

Not sure it's even involved but it sure lacks fuel by description or fuel delivery. That could be a failure of empowering fuel pump after cranking or perhaps it just can't keep up at all OR injectors quit getting a pulse.

Need to start ruling things in or out but think some issue with security system is part of it so far,

T

If you have a problem with the factory security system, then diagnosis is beyond your capability because you will need factory scan tools.

Hammer Time;

Friend has a scanner he just bought, we are going to give it a try tonight I will let you know what the outcome is. I definitely think you nailed the issue though. I also spoke to the folks that sold me the ignition switch and confirmed your observation.

I don't know what your friend bought but if he didn't pay over $4000 for it, it's not going to do the trick and even some of them won't.

This keeps getting better, spoke to Dealer they said some of the electronics on the older Jeeps can't be reprogrammed, suggested I reinstall the old electronic ignition along with my old lock set, to see if that helps. I'm going crazy here. But your continued efforts are appreciated.

thanks Kopeck

That could be true. Many cars have to replace the security module when the ignition is replaced if it uses a dedicated module that's not programmable. GM did it with Passkey for years.
