A month or so ago, my wife's 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0, 165k miles, started requiring that you pump the gas before it would start. Once started you had to keep a foot on the gas and a foot on the brake to back out of the garage because it would die if you weren't giving it gas. Once going down the road, it would idle fine at stop lights, etc. Then last week the tachometer and the speedometer quit working. No check engine light on. Checked throttle position sensor with voltmeter and was fine according to Haynes manual. After re-attaching breather to throttle body, it started and idled just fine , but just that one time. I disconnected the negative battery cable for a couple of hours from a suggestion on another forum about someone else's car. Tachometer and speedometer work now, but still have starting issue. Also, when I try to start it, it seems to really drag the battery down at first. Battery is 5 years old. Don't know if the battery could have anything to do with it or not. When Jeep is started, battery meter shows battery to be fine.

Problem solved by replacing the battery.
