I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the 6 cyl 4 liter engine. It has 123,000 miles on it. I bought it with 67,000 miles just over 3 years ago. I have never changed the plugs or wires. In the last two months the engine started idling rough when the it is "cold." It doesn't do this all the time and only when the engine is "cold." I have put some fuel injector cleaner through it and that has not solved the problem, so I'm assuming it is the ignition system.

I would like to give the Jeep a tune up and was thinking about replacing the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and the fuel filter. (I don't know a ton about vehicle repair, but helped my father replace all of these a number of years ago on his suburban.) Is it a good idea to replace the distributor cap and rotor? I take this vehicle on long trips and would like to prevent any problems that I can and keep this vehicle for at least another 3 years.

If I should replace the cap and rotor, how do I do it? Also, where is the fuel filter located for this particular vehicle?

Thank you for your help,

Joe

Not sure whether these parts will solve your problem but they can't hurt. Check out quality of parts as they differ and if you bother buy the good stuff.

Fuel filter should be and in line pest probably low on the frame rail.

You probably have all original parts that you mentioned. Life expectancy of wires, cap and rotor is unknown to me without seeing a problem. Plugs and fuel filter are items that do have a life as they actively work all the time and will need replacement and the other items are as said unknown to me as to how long they can last, T
