2000 Galant shuts off after 2 seconds - help please! Sign In

I have a 2000 Mistubishi Galant 2.4 liter 4-cyl with 130K miles that has been a great little car. However, as of a couple weeks ago it occasionally starts normally and after approximately 2 seconds the engine will turn off. It doesn’t matter if I rev the engine or if the car is cold or hot – it will turn off after two seconds.
It will usually repeat this behavior, sometimes for only a couple minutes and other times I give up and try it again later and it will keep running. After the first shut-down, the engine becomes harder to start and once started will run more roughly until it shuts down again or is given a lot of gas. The condition is occasional and feels random to me and it does not change if I rev the engine while starting it. It feels like someone just turned off the car. I don’t think it has anything to do with the ignition switch since I return the key to “On” right after starting and then 1.5 seconds later the car turns off. I also don’t think it is the security/transponder cutting the engine because the green security dashboard light does not illuminate and in the past when the security has engaged, it stops the car from starting all together. The car does have an after-market remote start that has been working fine for the last two years and a decent battery (although I’ll probably replace it before this winter). I also don’t think it’s a fuel issue since I can be flooring the gas pedal and the car will still shut down.
I’ve checked the fuses, replaced the ignition coils (they were shorting out and causing hesitation), and cleaned out the air intake but I have no idea what else to try. The Check Engine Light has been on since I got the car and the error code is always low compression in cylinder 3, but I have had it checked multiple times and the compression is good.

Guess: I think the aftermarket starter is shutting it down as it would if engine didn't start. I'd have that removed and wiring put back properly to original set up,

I thought of that as well but the car will continue the behavior even if I disconnect all wires and power from the remote start. Additionally, the behavior continues when i try and start the car with the remote start and when it fails to start, it waits the allotted time and tries again like it is supposed to. Seems like the remote start is working properly. Thanks for the idea!

I just can't know how invasive the thing was to the car. Did this one cut wires to run thru a device or just tap into certain ones?? I've seen them but won't install one for anyone for any amount of $. Hey - I understand they are handy and all that.

There simply has to be a means or time limiter of how long the car will run without actually having the key in it or they would run forever till out of fuel. That and should have some other fail safes to shut it down. If in an attached garage that could and has been fatal!

With the symptoms I still put that high on the possible list. Did you install it? Are there more items than meets the eye for this creation?

Still could be something else altogether and right now I can't think of anything with that character that could do that,

I did install the remote start. No wires were cut - they were isolated, soldered into, and insulated.

The programming is customizable and the car will run for 15 minutes after starting before shutting down. When the remote start shuts the car off, it locks the doors and that does not happen when the car shuts off after 2 seconds.

I'm more interested if anyone on this forum knows of a sensor or computer issue that would shut the car down shortly after starting if something abnormal is detected. Even when the remote start is completely removed from the system, the car continues shutting off so there is no way that it's the remote starter module.

sounds more like there is a problem with the anti-theft system. thats why it will start then quit after 2 sec.. it is not getting the signal to enable the fuel system to let it run. could not find alot of info on mitchell on this one. but do know that you will need a scanner that will be able to read the bcm as well as the pcm to see if it is getting the signal that it has the right key.

You said you've checked codes and there isn't anti theft codes. Normally with any alarm problems a code will be set.

It sounds like there is time when it won't start, that is when you need to find out what you're losing, spark or fuel and track that down....

More than like this is going to be a part, circuit or system that is failing, intermittently at this point, not a sensor or the PCM shutting the engine down, just for the fact whether it was anti-theft, cooling, reduced power,,,,, something where the PCM is limiting a system, a code would be set indicating this......

After reading your post, the 1st thing that popped into my head was a worn ign sw that was getting out of time. A quick check you could try would be when it's acting up, "hold" the switch in between the start & on position not letting it return fully to the on position by itself. If doing this keeps the car running normally you are looking at a bad ign sw. You just have to be careful not to hold if so far over it engages the starter. You don't want to engage the starter while the engine is running because it could damage the starter, ring gear or both.....

What is the code you said you have..............I'm not aware of any low compresion codes

Thanks for the input. I just checked the codes again and it is throwing the P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction, which makes total sense. I'm going to replace the sensor tomorrow since the wiring and everything look fine. I'll post results. A couple other codes showed up but I'm pretty sure they are caused by the camshaft position sensor issue (P0421 & P0303)

I replaced the camshaft position sensor and the check engine light went off and the starting issues seem to be gone. The engine still shakes under certain load conditions that I hope to figure out eventually.

I missed your previous reply.....

The 2 other codes wouldn't be related to a cmp sensor code.

The 421 is a cat code and the 303 is a cyl #3 misfire. If you have done any maintance recently change out the plugs, wires, filter, usually stuff and see if that helps the stumble. More than likely the 421 is going to come back once the cat moniter runs....
