2000 Chevy s10 4 cyl automatic transmission issues Sign In

Hey y'all, I'm preparing to drive cross-country and I'm trying to find out exactly what's wrong with my truck before trying to get the issue fixed. It's a 2000 Chevy s10 4cyl 2.2L with about 66K miles on it.

When I've driven longer distances (400-600 miles) in the past six months or so, the truck will often seem to be stuck in what I initially thought was overdrive but learned that was the incorrect term.

I'm not sure what it's called, but when I need to accelerate quickly, the car seems like its dropping into a lower gear, reaching the speed, then returning to the optimal gear.

Now, it feels like when I'm going about 75, the truck gets stuck in that lower gear when I'm trying to accelerate, at least that's what it feels like. The engine sounds like its working a lot harder and when I slow down, it's much slower to drop into a lower gear, another reason why I think it's getting stuck in a low gear at higher speeds than it should.

It hasn't caused any major problems but driving from Georgia to California with that issue is making me pretty damn nervous.

Y'all have any earthly idea what it could be? Since I assume it's a transmission issue I'm worried about getting taken to the cleaners at the shop.

Many thanks.

Is the check engine light on? If so get it scanned and post the exact code numbers here. What is the fluid level at? Has it ever been serviced?

Thanks for the reply.

The check engine light goes on and off without any real change in performance from what I can tell.

Since I've been having issues I check fluid levels weekly and those are all fine.

The only work I've had done on it is to replace the alternator and the ignition coil.

The fact it has come on shows there are codes being stored in the PCM and those codes may help explain the situation. This is a very complex system with the computers and the codes in it are the first step towards diagnosis. Some parts stores will scan them for free.

Any idea which auto parts stores check the codes? We've got your standard autozone and o'reily's around here.

That will certainly cause your problem. Although it could be caused by anything in the TPS circuit, the sensor itself is the most likely cause.

Thanks very much for the reply. Any idea what needs to be done to resolve that problem and about how much I'll need to pay?
