2000 Accord, vibrations and tire chirping after work on brakes Sign In

Hiya,

Just a heads up, full disclosure, I am an idiot when it comes to cars, so, yeah. Anywho, I just got new brake pads and had the rotors resurfaced on my 2000 Accord with about 135k miles. I had no problems with the brakes before, but when I took the car in for an unrelated issue the mechanic told me that they were in really bad shape and I was long overdue. A couple hundred miles after the new pads and rotor resurfacing, I'm noticing that when I brake at speeds above 30 or 40 mph, the steering wheel vibrates. I also noticed a chirping from the front right tire. The chirping gets faster paced at higher speeds. It definitely chirps louder when braking, but I do notice it from time to time when I'm not using the brakes as well, and usually at the lower speeds.

The research I've done online points to warped rotors, but, the fact that I hear chirping sometimes even when I'm not braking makes me wonder if it could be something else? Crazy

Thanks a ton for any advice!!!

what shape are the tires in? Easy way to rule them out would be to rotate the tires front to rear and see if the problem changes.

Who did the brakes as apparently not you? If they were trashed I seriously doubt there was enough meat to turn/resurface rotors at all and be within thickness specifications.

There isn't much extra metal and thinner means easy to warp and whatever noise and feelings of vibrations while braking. Do you want to go back to the shop/person who replaced them to check them again?

The tires are in good shape, they are probably only about 6 months old. I brought it to the service center of the dealership I got the car at. I'm willing to go back but when I called and described the issue the guy immediately says "sounds like rotor warping, this is caused by driving style." So that put me off a little bit, if he's jumping to the conclusion that it's my fault without taking a look. I looked at what causes rotor warping and I don't think I fit into that category lol....

He's right. It is rotor warping. That's caused by extreme heat. Rapid cooling makes it worse. There are possible causes that aren't the fault of the driver but it's usually the driver being too aggressive when braking.

NomAnor: You said you weren't a mechanic in different words up top. Nick's suggestion is cheap and easy new tires or not and warped rotor(s) now IMO and experience is from the metal too thin now or even real good ones could warp if really abused.

Quite likely marked on the rotor the max thickness and if you want to check it you could with a micrometer and about know they are under thickness if not from the prior brakes but now cutting more metal off of them - hence warping easily and IMO shouldn't have been done that way. Stinks but from the read dealer or not should have at a minimum given you a warning up front that they are too close to the end even if just a hair in spec and that they would not last as long and let you take the responsibility and risk of early failure of that job.

Warped seems like that's been determined and unfortunately means that job was just a waste as using even pads again is highly unlikely to work out with new rotors after this.

We are not there inspecting this so can only go by your input on what you have been told. If I misread something I apologize,

Tom
