1999 olds Alero Sign In

My daughter started her car today and the dash is inactive. There is no speedometer, gas gauge or lights. If I start it multiple times, I can get the mileage to light up and the battery light. It is strange because these don't always light up. I checked the fuses and they are good. I ven pulled one fuse after getting the mileage light working and the light went out. Then when I plugged it in the gauge went all the way up and then back down. I thought I got lucky, but it still does the same thing. What do you think ??

If you have a volt meter, check the voltage at the fuse that protects the circuit that powers the instrument cluster. Should be around charging system voltage with the engine running or battery voltage with the engine off key on.

If you have a low voltage at the fuse and the cluster is inoperative, you have high resistance somewhere. Could be in the ignition switch, so doing a voltage drop test across the ignition switch circuit that feeds that fuse would tell you if you have a faulty switch.

If you have good voltage at the fuse, your going to have to remove the instrument cluster and make some power and ground checks at the connectors.

Probably a bad dash cluster. GM has a lot of trouble with them but it needs to be looked at closer before buying one.
