1999 Mazda wont start and rolls when in park Sign In

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 that has been running fine. I went to start it up in the garage and it did not turn over. The Lights work. I can move the automatic transmission into any gear very easily with the key engaged. It also rolls even when in park. ANybody have any ideas?

The first step is to verify battery condition. Have it charged and tested.

That doesn't matter it needs to be tested.

! Rolls in park? This sounds more like it doesn't know it's in park (and isn't) or neutral and starter wouldn't start as safety switch disallows it. Check for anything moving when you shift it so easily + bet nothing moves underhood. That if so means it's linkage as fully broken in the last place it felt like to me.

Careful as I suspect this could get confused and might start for you in a gear so be ready or hoist drive wheels, set parking brake hard et.,

Yeah, I missed that "rolls in Park also". This must have a broken shift cable.

Is the CEL check engine light on?
How long has it been on?

The engine light was not on. It does not turn over so I can't see if it is on when it is running

Hitting all at once here. Key is it rolls in PARK. Watch out for this car now it can move and OP already said that and it's in a garage. Let's not see this smash up the garage, other car or the door over this!

I think you are right. Nothing happens when I shift it at all under the hood. I will quit trying to start it as I do not want it to engage if it starts and see if it is the shift cable. Will I be able to see the shift cable or is that hidden?

visible - under hood L/S on top of transaxle - connects onto neutral safety switch, AKA inhibitor sw.

Re: 1999 Mazda wont start and rolls when in park Sign In

On trans is some part that turns that now will turn free if this is exactly like I think. You probably can turn that by hand now and start this car. Make the guess which extreme is PARK and know it doesn't roll again and still use all caution it you do try to start it as it might not stay there and be running! Yikes.
If you really can't see this thru to get to where YOU can fix it or a place do secure the car so it can't roll away.
If you feel you can at least try you probably could start it and shift it from under the hood but face it, it ain't all that safe and you need a fully understanding person behind the wheel to actually still move or drive this car where you need it to be or tow it.
It's a loose cannon as I see it. Yup - have dealt with this type bull and also seen vehicles go flying thru walls!
Use your head on the approach so a dang cable broken isn't some disaster of damage or worse causing a full blown accident!

Thanks, I am just going to get it towed. I will not try to start it anymore. It is safe where it is as the emergency brake is on.
Thanks for your help.

Good move. Make sure tow driver is aware of this so it isn't in trouble where you have it taken and mark with a paper about it for anyone who might try to drive it.
Been there with some of this. Total pros shot a Jeep right into a wall, smashed all trash cans, ruined the Jeep but nobody got hurt. All that while I watched not involved in total disbelief that could do that much so easily.
Good luck, T
