1999 Honda Civic LX (Manual 5 Speed Transmission)
Generation: 6th
Chassis Code: EJ6
Engine Code: D16Y7
Engine Specs:
1.6L 16V SOHC, 106hp @ 6200 RPM
Mileage 195,000

When I come to a stop while driving my car rumbles and the RPM's drop almost to zero like it's about to stall but it doesn't. The check engine light has just come on about the same time this started happening. I was hoping someone might be able to offer some insight on what could be causing this problem and what can be done about it. I'm getting tired of spending money on mechanics. I'm pretty handy when it comes to fixing things myself, but I lack the knowledge to properly analyze the symptoms and formulate a solution. (at least the right one) I'd greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

I've also noticed that the temperature gage has started fluctuating rapidly every now and then as well. I don't know if this is somehow related or a completely different issue.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Took the car to Advanced auto parts. They said the engine light was due to a faulty o2 sensor. I bought the part and rented a socket to install it. It doesn't sound like this would be causing the overheating problem though. Do you think there is any correlation?

There seems to be two sensors on the engine as well. One on close to the top in front, and one to the left close to the bottom. Which one is the o2 sensor?

Don't hold your breath on them being right about that diagnosis.
I need the exact code number.
