1998 Toyota Camry 4 cyl 2.2L Starting problem Sign In

For the past few months my Camry has an odd problem when I start it. Sometimes when I turn the key I hear a single click, as though the battery is nearly dead. If I try over and over (usually about 10 times, once well over 50 times) the starter will finally slightly turn the engine. The next turn of the key causes the starter to spin the engine just as though there is nothing wrong. The battery is fairly new, and it does no good to attempt a jump start when the car is exhibiting this behavior. It is intermittent. It will almost always do this first thing in the morning, almost never if it has just been shut off within the last hour.

I hate to just start throwing parts at this problem as they are all expensive. Has anyone had the same issue and can recommend the most likely solution?

Thanks!

Well you should get it checked to be sure but it sounds typical of a bad starter.

It gets a dead spot in the it and turning the key a few times will get past it. Sometimes it gets to the point where you have to rap on the starter body with a hammer to get it to crank over.

Thanks. I've wondered about a dead spot. Will a starter bench test cause it to show up?
