1998 Nissan Altima - Wife left lights on and we recharged the battery, now the ignition isn't wanting to switch on for nothing. Sign In

A week ago or so my wife left the car lights on. It killed the battery. That led up to us recharging the battery, which led to the alarm going off -- so we took out those fuses and kept on going. Car started a little bit after, but once turned off it didn't want to start back up. We replaced the battery, nothing changed. We had the starter rebuilt, nothing changed. Right now the car, when you turn the key, it sometimes acts like it wants to turn over and sometimes it doesn't do anything. If you turn the key and it starts to kick on, then you can turn the key off and back on over and over real fast and eventually it'll come on.

So, therein lies a problem. Is the ignition switch going out? Faulty wiring? I'm honestly not sure. I'd *love* some help because my wife and I are completely broke right now, but if I can't get help here then I'll have to try to scrounge up some cash to take it to a shop. Appreciate any and all help, thanks.

Small edit -- Apparently if the fuse is in for the power windows the car doesn't want to start at all. So that has to stay out for it to even try to kick on.

You have an alarm that has armed because of the power interruption and removing the fuses does not disable the alarm. It merely silences it. If you have a remote, ulock it with that. If not lock all the doors and unlock it with the key from the driver's door.

That's what we've been doing, but the car still has issues starting. When you turn the key, sometimes there's silence but if you get it to where it starts to turn over -- you can keep flipping the key off/on real fast to get the engine to finally kick on. Would the alarm be causing the ignition issues?

If there was corrosion on the battery terminals before. Get some battery cleaner and a battery brush. Take the cables off and make sure to clean both cables & terminals really good.....

I'll check the battery terminals soon. Also, on a side note, the radio doesn't turn on or anything now. Not sure if that's a sign of anything or not.
