1998 Ford Taurus SE Will Not Stay Running Without Giving Gas Sign In

Greetings :)

Vehicle Details:
1998 Ford Taurus SE
3.0 V6 Engine
148,000 miles

So about a month and a half ago, my car suddenly would not start. If I pressed the gas pedal when cranking, it would stay running, but stall out as soon as I released the gas pedal. If I keep the gas pedal down for about five minutes or so, I can let off, and it stalls to about 500 RPM and starts shaking, then finally will shut off.

We had a mechanic take it in, who assured me the problem was a faulty fuel pump, and had it replaced for $300. Apparently the problem was intermittent, because a few days later it started doing the same thing again, and up in the last few days has gotten consistent, and now every time I try to start it it fails this way. (worth noting that it has gotten very cold here in the last week.)

I have done a lot of searching online, which seem to indicate either an issue with the throttle body, or the IAC valve. I bought some throttle body cleaner, and cleaned out the throttle body myself (which, for 148,000 miles, was not very dirty at all). It hasn't seemed to help at all though.

If there's any information I can clarify, I'll do the best I can. I'd appreciate any help you can offer!

kcopp; The IAC can be physically cleaned, as well. Looking into the throttle body, you'll see the port that runs to the IAC. You may need a new gasket, but you can remove the IAC, clean the port and the IAC itself. Now...if you must open the throttle to get this beast started, a couple of things come to mind. The IAC isn't opening allowing air and causing a rich condition. Or, for whatever reason, it is just plain running too rich. Faulty fuel pressure regulator (check fuel pressure, check for evidence of fuel at the vacuum hose where it connects to the regulator), CTS (coolant temp sensor), leaky injector(s). Looking at fuel pressure KOEO and KOER would help, possilbly. Being a '98, this is an OBDII system and hopefully will have set a trouble code(s). Most parts stores will retrieve the code(s). Don't buy any parts, but post any codes you get, here, and we'll give it a go.

You can also bring the car back to the shop that did the fuel pump so they can check the fuel pressure. It is possible the pump is defective. You may also have a defective fuel pressure regulator. It could be stuck wide open returning the fuel to the tank rather than pressurizing the fuel rail.

You've got some real good advise to check out from a couple of the guys. If you do find some codes go ahead and post them.

One more quick thing you can do to see if will help is to clean the MAF sensor with some MAF sensor cleaner (nothing else or you could harm it)

Make sure to clean the little wire inside, that's the part that sense the air. If it does cure your problem I would really consider replacing it as soon as possible.

Sorry it took me so long to get back on this. Thank you all for your input. I have seen the IAC, but haven't tried cleaning it yet. I will have to try that either tomorrow or Saturday. Surprisingly yesterday evening and today I have not had the issue; funny how that works.

How would I go about checking fuel pressure? To be honest I really wouldn't know where to look; I'm not very knowledgeable with the inner workings of vehicles, though I'd like to learn all I can.

I did have the error codes checked (the Check Engine Soon light thing I believe is what you're talking about?) and the only code he found was that the gas cap was missing (and it had been for a while *shame*, I lost it a while back and hadn't gotten around to replacing it till that day.

I've actually recently moved, so they're not very convenient to get to, but worst case scenario I might try to go back to them. I'm not exactly happy with their service though, so I might honestly rather just pay somebody else local to do that.

That looks like a pain to get to, haha, but I'll definitely try that as well.

Again, thanks for the tips, everyone! I'll post back once I find some new information.

This is the IAC; Below is the area to be cleaned. This is the MAF sensor underside that needs to be cleaned. This is the MAF sensor.

Okay, so since Friday, I've had no problems whatsoever starting...

At this point, I'm going to just leave it alone since it's working. If it starts acting up again, I'll attempt the suggestions provided in this thread.

Again, I very much appreciate the advice and suggestions!
