1998 Accord Rusted fuel tank/sitting for 7 mos. Sign In

I have a 1998 Honda Accord EX (2.3 L). Last June it started leaking gas and the mechanic told me the gas tank is rusted and needs to be replaced. I could not afford to get it fixed so it has been sitting in the driveway since July and has not been started.

I didn't know I needed to start it periodically to prevent other problems. Now the battery is dead as well. I'm trying to find out what I can/should do before taking it in to have the gas tank repaired in order to minimize how much I'll have to spend on the repairs.

Advice will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not real sure of the answer you are looking for here but you are correct....If a car is sitting it's best to start it & run it periodically & if possible, drive it.

Since your tank is leaking, it would be dangerous to have gas in it to run it so your 1st step would be to replace the tank and going off your post, if that is all that is wrong with it, then after that repair you would be back on the road and following a normal maintence schedule again...

I guess the only thing I would recommend would be to tow it to the shop....

If it's still going to be sitting for a while, you could put it on blocks and cover the car but I wouldn't recommend running it with a fuel leak....

That's really what I was looking for. I was wondering if I could save money by doing some of the work to get it running again myself (replace the battery, change oil, etc.) but if the fuel tank should be repaired before any of those other things are addressed, I'll just have it towed and hope for the best on the bill.

Thank you!

No problem....

You definitely want to address all those maintenance issues since it's been sitting.....and you can do all that yourself, just make sure the tank is going to get fix within a short amount of time of doing all these maintenance things or you'll be doing them all over again if for some reason something happens and the car sits for months again....

I'll be getting the tank replaced very soon.

But let's say I get the battery recharged or replaced. Can I do further damage to the car if I try to start it? Would it be dangerous to try to start it?

Well....like I said earlier....The 1st step is to repair the tank....If it's rusty & leaking then even if it had fuel in it you wouldn't want to start it because of the leak, that could start a fire. Also you don't want to suck all that rust through the fuel line.....

Change the oil, coolant, filters, battery but don't try to start it until it's safe....

Now if you haven't been doing maintenance routinely on this car where you familar with doing it.....It might be better to just have the shop do this along with the tank.....If you do something wrong, this might cause a problem on start up at the shop & wind up costing you more...

I'll let you be the judge of that.....If this is the 1st time you've done any of this.......Let the shop do the maintenance items and then you can do them later on as needed....

Gotcha. I will let the shop handle it, then. Thank you again!
