1997 and 2003 chevy tracker- same front differential/gears ?? Sign In

i just bought a 2003 chevy tracker and the guy neglected to tell me the front diff was busted. as soon as i put it into 4WD it made horibble noises.
so i have a 1996 and a 1997 chevy tracker and they are all 5 speeds but i dont know if the front diffs will work if i put one of the older ones into the 2003.

like if the gears are the same and all that. it looks the same on the outside but cant tell for sure.

i have wanted another tracker for 8 years and fuinally buy one and this happen ugh..

So far all you know or stated is that it makes a horrible noise. What's wrong with it? It may not need a whole differential at all?

Doubt parts will interchange but can't know that without matching up some #s, VINs a lot of that info is known or available by salvage yards or maybe dealer on this at the ages.

#1 problem is you didn't check this vehicle out before buying it. Then now you really don't know what is making the noise yet.

When you have a clue what it needs then choose the route to the fix it seem too early now to know,

okay first of all i didnt ask what was wrong i just said what happened. I know exactly whats wrong. the front diff carrier housing is busted and i need a new one. the gears inside are even fine.

the question i did ask was if a diff would interchange for a 97 and a 2003 because that means i could use the carrier housing. and it only makes the noise in 4x4 so we didnt realise it until we put it in 4x4. i still would of bought the tracker so it woudnt of mattered if i found out before habnd. as it was like 1000$ for a mint every where else 2003 tracker with 200 k and A/C so i wanted it lol.

I looked up tracker parts on ebay to see what range of year they sold the parts for and it looks to be 99-2004 for things like doors and lights etc... but i didnt see any diff parts.

Just call a Salvage yard with both VIN #s ready - and ask what fits what for exactly yours. That software is somewhat only purchased by the "junkyards" or whatever you name them.

They'll tell you what years or ask questions and if they have it or not (whole units by this age only most likely) and have the answer right away.

If you have these spare vehicles to part out like that you might even make some swap deal?

IDK - some yards may be totally on line with info if you don't want to plain call one. Here (any place really) they order from others what they don't have that's obsolete and choose how fast you want it and of course how much,

i called a bunch of junk yards and they will only sell the whole diff 300-400$ which sucks because i only need that part and the rest of my diff is mint. but oh well. and it is 1999-2004 they said.

Sounds cheap to me! That's all they'll usually do. What would they do with the rest of it? Check it out and know as much about one as you can. Used is warrantied to turn (here) but could have other issues used.

This vehicle is OLD as vehicles go with a ton of miles on it so you'll probably be better off with a good whole one,

BUY IT!

The last thing you want to attempt is to install those gears into a different housing. You have no idea of the setup and special tools required

Definitely agree with HT on that. You're definitely better off buying the entire front end and installing it than setting up gears.
