A few months ago my dad helped me replace the radiator in my 1.9L Z3 BMW because it was leaking along the junction between the plastic and metal parts. I haven’t driven the car much at all since then, but today I drove about 4 miles and the engine started to overheat. I stopped to open the hood and noticed that coolant seemed to be leaking out of the closed reservoir cap. I could hear sizzling noises coming from the cap. When I got home, I noticed that almost all of the coolant was gone from the reservoir (it was filled about halfway when I first stopped). Could this be a water pump issue? Alternatively, I have the reservoir cap from the previous radiator on the new radiator because the new one did not come with one. Could this be an issue with the cap not sealing completely? Do you have advice on where else the leak could be coming from and how to solve this issue?

The engine started to overheat and then you drove it home to check it? ............................... not real smart.

I waited for the engine to cool down before driving again- took about 20 min. I had to stop several times and repeat that process. I was a few miles away from home.

That's good. Are you sure the system had coolant and didn't freeze?

I added coolant to the system when I initially stopped, but the reservoir was almost empty by the time I got home.

No, I'm talking about before any of this happened, when you replaced the radiator. Did you fill it with water or coolant then?

Yes, I added coolant when I replaced the radiator. I didn't open the air escape valve though at the time. Do you think that is part of the problem?

Just looking for the possible cause of the overheating. You probably still had air pockets in the system.

It turns out there is a defect at the bottom of the reservoir, which is causing the leaking. Thank you for the help.
