1997 Jeep
Grand Cherokee Laredo
4.0 V6
4WD

My Jeep has just randomly started dying while I'm driving. At first it would start right back up, but now it seems to be getting harder and harder to get started after an incident like this. According to other comments in forums that I have read it is a common problem in Jeeps 1996-1998. The only thing they seem to mostly agree on is that it's something to do with the PCM (I don't know what that is) A little strapped for cash the cheapest and easiest route would be preferable... what am i looking at here?

PCM = Powertrain Control Module. Get codes again if you have already as even if light isn't on it could have something stored or should,

First ,you should have a inline 6 not a v6. There are a few things common with cherokee's of that era. First check the engine wiring harness for damage .Look very good at rear of eng for chafing and at front near exhaust. If all ok have the crank sensor checked.

Like Tom said I would check for any codes first.
It could be any number of things at this point.

I have found several jeeps w/4.0 with either chaffed harness at rear of eng or the harness melted to the exhaust. THIS IS WHERE I RECOMMEND STARTING , BASED ON MY EXPERIANCE . LOOKING ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES AND IT'S FREE. Mad

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and it has a hard time starting up when the weather is cold. When the weather is 70 degrees and above it will start up and sometimes die but when I turn the ignition key over again it will start up again. When the weather is 60 degrees and below it will not start at all. Sometimes it will die when I'm on the road at stop signs or traffic lights, but it always starts up again. I have taken it back to the car lot where I'm buying it from and they have put it on the scope. The scope comes back the PCM which stands for Powertrain Control Module. My question is if I replace the PCM will this solve the problem? I already know the PCM through the dealer costs $630.00 plus tax and for the mechanics there to replace it and program it will be $218.00. I'm very frustrated and any comments here will be greatly appreciated.
