1997 Ford Escort Struggles to Accelerate Sign In

My 1997 Ford Escort (4 cylinder) is struggling to accelerate/change gears. When I lightly press the gas, I can hear it revving higher and higher for ten to fifteen seconds before it quiets down. Going up hills, it can rev for up to a minute before it goes back to normal. (Unless I touch the gas at all... then it starts revving again.) It used to be a very quiet car, and I'm a bit concerned that it seems to be getting louder.

Just some history on the car. It has a brand new radiator, new shaft sensor, new oil sending unit, recently changed oil, new timing belt, and all recently replaced vacuum line.

However, the struts on the back end and the motor mounts need to be replaced.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Check engine light on?
Automatic transmission?

Not sure exactly what you mean by revving. Does the engine rev and the car doesn't accelerate or does the engine increase in rpm along with the vehicle speed, but the transmission doesn't shift to the next gear(if this is automatic).

Check engine light is off. It's an automatic transmission. The engine will rev, and the car will accelerate, slowly. But it feels like it hasn't shifted to the next gear. It can take over a minute to shift some days. My brother insists that this is normal for an older car. But the thing is, this is all recent; my car didn't used to do it.

How is the transmission fluid level and condition? From your description is sounds like the transmission is slipping. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to call a reputable transmission shop in your area to have them take a look.
