1997 Chevrolet Malibu LS Stops while in motion Sign In

I have a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3100 Engine 219,000 miles, engine rebuild 3,000 miles ago.

My Problem is that engine will start and I can drive for about 15 minutes I hear alarm chimes from dash then the engine will shut off. Check Engine light is not on when running and Theft light is not on. The car will restart after 10 or 15 minutes and the cycle repeats.

I have replaced the battery, the fuel filter and the camshaft sensor and the problem persists.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Engine is getting fuel.

When I had a no start issue there was no spark, but the next day the car started with no problem. then it started repeating the same cycle, running 15 minutes, stalling and not restarting for another 10 or 15 minutes.

When the car is idle and I apply the accelerator, engine goes to about 4,000 rpms and then idles up and down with the accelerator pressed to the floor, engine doesn't rev more than 4,500 rpms (idling up and down when in park).

So, you rev the poor thing to 4,500 and any questions why you blow up a motor? If you have to ask it's too late,

It's not supposed to. It has a rev limiter in Park.

When you have completed all of the testing and you have all of the results 9wnen it's not starting), then post back.
