1996 Oldsmobile Ciera: Grinding Noise When Turned On	Sign In

It makes a grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from the back whenever it is turned on, before it is taken out of park or anything. The loudness of the noise varies, but it never lasts for more than a few minutes. Any ideas?

Noises are difficult by nature. Try to locate where it's from. Maybe hoist it and try bumping all things that might touch the starter motor or any shield and do exhaust parts all along see if something is loose or what. Do that with engine off first and again with engine on when you would expect it careful how you hoist it.

Some other maybe motor mounts and or a belt driven item itself loosen belt or remove spin everything that will for anything unsual. Power steering? Maybe too check fluid and its color change out if suspect?

Good luck. By user name just don't cut off your nose to spite your face to save a buck that could be simple now and a disaster if not found and fixed if it takes a REAL mechanic and shop to find it,

It sounds like it is coming from the trunk, but I'm not 100% sure. Does that give ya any idea?

You can carefully use a wooden rod or long 24" or so screwdriver pressed to outside of your ear and hear or locate the area or item. Also a mechanic's stethoscope can I do without almost always.

There's an electric fuel pump in there that does make noise if quiet out and no door chimes just turn the key to "run" and hear it. It should prime up pressure and quit in a few seconds. If it continues running all the time now we have something to work with and declare you've narrowed it down.

A fuel pump can be intermittent noise and still work but a sign it should go. If constant there's more to fix,
