I have a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis, and replaced the cataylic converter last summer. It has a loud rattle noise. It is NOT a heat shield. I read a post about drilling a hole in it? Sounds crazy to ruin a fairly new cc. I also noticed the adapter cable is broken off the screw on the side of the converter. Would that have anything to do with it making noise?

Does the Catalyst rattle if you hit it with the heel of your hand? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

So, it needs to be replaced. The substrate is broken. If it was replaced last summer, it should be under warranty.

I also noticed the adapter cable is broken off the screw on the side of the converter. Not sure what you mean here. There is a light green wire with plug-in adapter that has a silver jack plug in on the end that goes into the nut on the side of the cataylic converter. It is broken on the end that goes into CC.

That is the oxygen sensor. Your check engine light must be on. If the front 02 sensor isn't working, that could damage your catalyst. The computer needs the signal from the front O2 sensor to be able to trim the fuel to air ratio for proper converter operation. How long has it been like that? You'll probably need to replace the damaged O2 sensor. Then you will probably need another catalytic converter because it may have gotten toasted. Then it would be important to clear the trouble codes from the PCM and then see if any come back. OK I will replace the sensor, and see what else I can do to quiet the car down. 280,000 miles, and it was so quiet until the cat converter starting screaming.

If you replace just the sensor and the catalyst substrate has come apart or melted, you really don't want to be putting a new sensor in that environment. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I thought about it MG, but why even bother. If the owner doesn't want to figure out or fix the problem that is causing the light to come on and wants to disconnect it, that is their problem not mine. I am really surprised HT didn't fire up his flame thrower though...lol Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
